    Abstract

THE VALIDITY OF PREOPERATIVE BARIUM ENEMA EXAMINATION IN DETECTING ENTEROCOLITIS IN PATIENTS WITH HIRSCHSPRUNG’S DISEASE IN DR. MOEWARDI HOSPITAL SURAKARTA Abstract Objective: Definite diagnosis on enterocolitis as complication in Hirschsprung’s Disease (HD) is histopathology or anatomic pathology examination resulted from samples taken during operation or biopsy of proximal part of the bowel suspected with aganglionic abnormality. To all patients with HD, we always perform clinical and barium enema examination previously before the operative management. Barium enema examination might be used as early detector to determine whether the HD complicated by enterocolitis by the time it was found or not, it could be as well a good predictor in defining whether the patient suffered from enterocolitis as complication of HD or not yet. Method: The present study is analytic observational study. Sample was collected from all patients diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s Disease (HD) underwent operative management in pediatric surgery department of Dr. Moewardi Hospital Surakarta during period of January until December 2016. We collected a total of 30 samples, and performed validity test (sensitivity and specificity) by using Mann-Whitney test. Results: Diagnostic test showed sensitivity value was 0,900 and specificity was 0,850, which both of these values belong to good category (p >0,8). Conclusion: Statistic analysis proved the validity of barium enema examination, hence it may be used to detect enterocolitis. Keyword: Enterocolitis, Barium enema, Hirchsprung’s disease.
