    Abstract

    RESPONSE ARTEMISIA ANNUA L. TO SHADE AND GIBBERELIN APPLICATION IN LOWLANDS1) Hermawan Cahya Kusuma2), Ahmad Yunus3) Samanhudi4) Study Program of Agrotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta ABSTRACT Artemisinin is the malaria drug only after Plasmodium resistance to Chloroquine and quinine, but production is still low. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the production of Artemisinin from Artemisia annua L. This research aimed to determine the effect of shade and gibberellins and their interaction on the growth of Artemisia annua L. in the lowlands. This research was conducted in Jumantono, Karanganyar, Central Java in June 2015 to February 2016. This research used nested design consisting of two factors with three replications. The first factor was the shade consists of three contents, namely shade of 0%, 50% and 75%. The second factor was the concentration of gibberellin given that consists of four levels: 0 ppm, 25 ppm, 75 ppm and 100 ppm. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and if there are significant differences continued with Duncan Multiple (Duncan Multiple Range Test) rate of 5% and Regression Analysis. The variables observed were plant height, number of branches, root volume, time of flowering, weight of flowers, as well as contents of artemisinin. The results showed that treatment without shade showed the highest flower weight of 7,675 gram, while the highest artemisinin content was shown by shade treatment of 50% with an average of 0.26%. The 75 ppm Gibberellin application without shading showed the highest plant height, number of branches, and root volume, while 100 ppm gibberellin showed the fastest flowering time on all shade levels.
