      Abstract

      Rice is one of the most important agricultural commodities to meet the needs of the Indonesian people. Indonesian people consume rice twice more than other people in the world. They are need 60 kg per year for everybody. The high demand for rice, it is necessary to make efforts to increase rice production. In addition, post harvest of rice also affects the quality and quantity of the rice. Obstacles encountered are pest attacks can affect food security at regional and national levels. One way to overcome this is by post harvest handling using dry ice. Dry ice is carbon dioxide (CO2) that has been frozen and is usually used as a substitute for ice cubes. This solid CO2 does not melt but evaporates into gas or is also called sublime. The objective of this research is to know the appropriate packaging for rice and dry ice impact on rice quality. The research was conducted in the laboratory of pests and diseases of agricultural faculty of UNS and at Boyolali in April-October 2016 by using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors: rice and storage. The variables observed were population of S.oryzae and T.castaneum, damage to rice, and description of rice quality from savings. The results showed that 10 grams of solid CO2 dose was effective in suppressing the populations of imago S.oryzae and T.castaneum, where rice storage had no effect on pest behavior, and solid CO2 did not affect the smell of rice and the color of rice.
