    Abstract

    ABSTRACT BAIQ YULIA KURNIA WAHIDAH. S111508023 (2017). Switching Code in interacting in Ulil Albaab Boarding School environment. Sociolinguistic Study. Thesis advisors: Prof. Dr. Djatmika, M.A. 2: Dr. Sri Marmanto, M.Hum. Linguistic Descriptive. Postgraduate of Sebelas Maret University (UNS ) Surakarta. This research aims to finding out and describe the usage and types of code-switching in four domains at Ulil Albaab boarding school. This research also discusses certain factors that prompt code-switching at Ulil Albaab boarding school The data provision in this study was done through recording the dialogue visually or audio-visually. They were then procceded using sadap and simak method. The data are comprised of primary and secondary data. Primary data are visual or audio-visual recordings of the interaction while secondary data resulted from prior reseach reviews. The data were utterances cintaining three types of code-switching such as metaphorical, conversational, and situational. those three of data play as a sign for the existence of code-switching usage. The object of his study is any interaction that contains code-switching and factors that cause code-switching to happen. The result shows that friendship is the most frequently exploited domain 135 or 40.66% in which code-switching was found. The types of code switching that are found are metaphorical, conversational, and situational. the type of code-switching mostly used in all domains is conversational (96 or 28.91 %). The factors that cause code switching are the change of topic, the attendance of the third person, the reduplication of words for simple sentence, the change of dialect variation, based on the situation. These four domains were filled with language variation in which Sasak becomes the dominance (82 or 24.69 % data of situational code-switching). So, it can be concluded that the interaction process of code-switching usage in each domain was carried out in accordance with the speakers’ language variation in order to make interaction run well.
