      Abstract

      This research discusses about the acculturation of Islamic and Christian ornament in Hagia Sophia museum. The purposes of this research are (1) Describing the histories of Hagia Sophia in three periods of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Turkey, (2) Describing the the processes of transition of Hagia Sophia from church, to the mosque, and museum, (3) Describing the acculturation happened in Hagia Sophia museum. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with historical approachment. Data accumulation technique uses literature technique. The reference books are the books that related to three periods power in Istanbul and art of architecture. Then the collected data is analyzed descriptively by using historical approachment and presented in descriptive qualitative through narration and drawing. The results of this research describe that Hagia Sophia was commanded by three periods, they were Byzantine under the reign of Constantine I and Justinian I, Ottoman under the reign of Muhammad Al Fatih, and Modern Turkey under the reign of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The function changes of Hagia Sophia happened due to the commutation change of three periods in Istanbul, it was a church in Byzantine, was a mosque in Ottoman, and as museum in Modern Turkey until now. This functional change has influenced in architectural change, both in structure and interior. When the function was a mosque, there was a change in structure and interior (ornament). When the function as museum, some church interiors that removed then returned and paired with mosque interior. Hagia Sophia has been a museum until now with ornament acculturation of Islamic and Christian in it. Keywords: Acculturation, Islamic Ornament, Christian Ornament, and Hagia Sophia.
