    Abstract

    This classroom action research aims to improve the Indonesian language beginning reading competency using the word card in the mild-mental retarded DIII C graders of SDLB Negeri Sragen in the school year of 2009/2010. The subject of research was the mild-mental retarded DIII C graders of SDLB Negeri Sragen in the school year of 2009/2010 as many as 5 students. Techniques of collecting data used were test, observation, and documentation. The data was analyzed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis. The result of research shows that in Cycle I there is only one student obtaining 60 score, there are three students obtaining 50 score, and there is one student obtaining 40 score, while in cycle II there is only one students obtaining 60 score, there students obtaining 70 score and one students obtaining 80 score, so that the reading competency of the mild-mental retarded DIII C graders of SDLB Negeri Sragen “improves”. From the result of this research, it can be concluded that learning using the word card media can improve the beginning reading competency in the mild-mental retarded DIII C graders of SDLB Negeri Sragen in the school year of 2009/2010.
