    Abstract

    Earthquakes occur because of the shifting plates of the earth which cause vibration which then travels down to the earth's surface causing vibrating of all objects in the earth's surface including buildings. When it’s happen with large frequency can damage of structure. The amount of force depends on the location of the building, type of soil, and the weight of the building structureitself. A building that is not well planned to hold the force can be destroyed. By shearwall installation is expected to hold the lateral forces due to earthquake. This research has a purposeto determine thechange of horizontal deviation and the change of the beam-columnelementscapacitybefore and after shearwall installation in the case of steel structures in the three portals dimensiwhich receivedgravity load (dead load and live load) and lateral loads (earthquake load and wind load ). Building models are analyzed in terms of 8-shaped building with 8 floors + 1 floor roof. The measures of building plan is 60 m × 60 m. Inter-floor height is 4 m. The function of the building used as a trade center. Analysis carried out in 3- dimensional models using a computer program ETABS v9.0.0. This research result the conclusion that the shearwall installation provides increased structural stiffness. As a result of increased stiffness, obtained a decrease of horizontal deviation in x direction ranged from 79.41540% to 87.48125% and the y direction ranged from 96.76767% to97.26494%. Also found another conclusion that the shearwall installation was not able raise beam column capacity, but able to reduce the existing loadsthat have tochange the value of the moment should be smaller.
