    Abstract

2017. This research aims to explain how The Lone Ranger represents Native Americans genocide done by White people during westward expansion era. The source of data is The Lone Ranger film which is directed by Gore Verbinski. The primary data are shots, scenes, sequences, dialogues, and other cinematographic elements. The secondary data includes all selected works related to the issue such as books, journal, news, articles, thesis, and dissertations. This research is a descriptive qualitative research under the framework of American Cultural Studies. Historical approach and socio-cultural approach are used as the way to design the research. Raphael Lemkin’s genocide theory is used to get a deeper understanding of genocide conception and to examine a specified set of Native American genocide phenomena. James Waller’s theory of genocide is used to support Lemkin’s theory in analyzing the background of genocide. Meanwhile, race theories from Gordon Allport, June Howard and Steven Baum are used to analyze the negative relationship between White people and Native Americans in the West. Moreover, semiotic-film theory is used to examine the meaning portrayed in the film. In the research analysis, it is found that The Lone Ranger film represents genocide as the systematic action adopted from European colonialism which destructs Native Americans’ life and culture. Moreover, the representation of genocide appropriates with eight aspects of Lemkin’s genocide theory, which are: (1) background, (2) conditions leading to genocide, (3) methods and techniques of genocide, (4) genocidists, (5) propaganda, (6) responses of victims, (7) responses of outsider groups, and (8) aftermath.
