    Abstract

    STUDY OF SPECIES AND MUDSKIPPER HABITUAL BEHAVIOUR AT WONOREJO MANGROVE FOREST SURABAYA ANANG SETYO BUDI Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta ABSTRACT Mudskipper is a member of the true bony fish (Osteichthyes), included in the family of Gobiidae. Mudskipper lives in mangrove forests around the coast or estuary area. The modification of several parts of its body allows mudskipper to move, breath and survive on land for a long period. The purpose of this study is to determine the kind and habitual behaviour of mudskipper at Wonorejo Mangrove Forest Surabaya. Preliminary observations were used for identification and determination of observation zone. Mudskipper habitual behaviours were observed with ad libitum sampling method. Behaviour frequencies were observed with focal-animal sampling method. Behaviour observation parameters were active time, resting time, and burrowing time; feeding; locomotion activity; social interactions (intra-species and inter species); self-defense; and the comparison of current behaviour at different moon phases. Data is analyzed by describing their behaviour. Periophthalmus argentilinaetus using 24% time for resting at surface of mudflat; 33% inside their holes; 5% for a meal; 31% for moving (locomotion); 4% to interact with other species and 3% to interact with other species. Periophthalmodon schlosseri using 24% of their time for resting at surface of mudflats; 18% inside their holes; 10% for a meal; 38% for moving (locomotion); 3% to interact with other species and 6% to interact with other species. The peak of Periophthalmus argentilinaetus and Periophthalmodon schlosseri outside holes activities occur during the day. Highest mealtimes of Periophthalmus argentilinaetus and Periophthalmodon schlosseri is at 09:01 AM to 12:00 PM. Cruising range of Periophthalmodon schlosseri is wider than Periophthalmus argentilinaetus. Periophthalmus argentilinaetus live together and clustered in a region but perform activities independently and has its own territory. Periophthalmodon schlosseri tend to live individually or solitary. The self-defense behaviour of both species are run, enter the hole, threatening opponents with dorsal fin and physical attack.
