    ABSTRACT DIAN PATRIA ALAN HUDA, D0212033, MOTIVATION FOR THE USE OF EMOJI ON WhatsApp AND SATISFACTION IN A SUBMISSION OF A MESSAGE (Motivation Correlation Studies for The Use of Emoji on WhatsApp And Satisfaction in A Submission of a Message Among Students of Communication Sciences Class Of 2014 In Surakarta) WhatsApp is one of the short message service application that arise as a result of advancement in technology that exist today. With WhatsApp, man as a social being be able to communicate with each other anytime and anywhere. This short message service is supported by emoji feature which allows you to convey emotions and feelings which cannot be delivered directly. Emoji is an illustrated symbol that resembles the human facial expressions, animals, activities, and more. Additionally, emoji also act as emphasis on the information contained in the message. This research aimed to prove whether there is any connection between the motivation of using emoji in WhatsApp of satisfaction in in a submission of a message. In this research approach uses and gratifications theory that looked at the use of media and the level of fulfillment of information needs. Type of research used by the survey that is quantitative method. The population used in this study are communication science students in Surakarta, which consists of Universitas Sebelas Maret, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Universitas Slamet Riyadi Surakarta and Universitas Sahid Surakarta. From the amount population of 303 students, the samples used were 244 respondents. The sampling technique used in this method is simple random sampling. Data collected through questionnaires and data analysis using Spearman correlation coefficient test. The result of Spearman correlation coefficient test between the motivational use emoji to WhatsApp with satisfaction in in a submission of the message, obtained coefficient figures of 0.779. By looking at the correlation coefficient guidelines, these results are in a strong level. both these variables showed a positive correlation direction. This is supported by the level of significance of the relationship between both variables was 99%, with an error tolerance of 5%. Therefore, there is a significant relationship between motivation to use emoji to WhatsApp to satisfaction in in a submission of the message.
