AN ANALYSIS ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SCIENTIFIC APPROACH IN TEACHING WRITING BASED ON 2013 CURRICULUM (A Case Study at the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu Karanganyar in Academic Year 2014/2015). Diah Kristina, M.A., Ph.D. English Education Department of Graduate School of Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta The objectives of this study are: (1) analyzing the teaching and learning documents whether they are developed based on 2013 curriculum or not; (2) analyzing the teaching and learning process whether they are developed based on the theory of scientific approach or not; (3) describing the difficulties encountered by the teacher during the implementation of 2013 curriculum in writing class; (4) describing the strategies identified by English teachers to overcome the problems during the implementation of 2013 Curriculum in writing class; and (5) describing the students’ writing achievement particularly in recount text. The method used in this research was case study which was conducted to eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu from April to June 2015. The research data were collected by using the techniques of observation, interview, and collecting document analysis, in the form of lesson plan, syllabus, book, exam sheet, students’ score, and teachers’ questionnaire result,and so on. The results of this study are: (1) learning documents including lesson plan, materials, and students’ assessments are developed based on 2013 Curriculum and syllabus used is set by government; (2) teaching and learning process are developed based on scientific approach theory, but not all steps happened in the lesson; (3) difficulties found are: creating learning documents especially in creating lesson plan; difficulting in implementing scientific approach, especially in questioning and communicating step; implementing a truly pure students’ centered learning; using the WERB book because it does not supply enough material; teaching writing; and difficulty in students’ assessment format; (4) strategies identified by English teachers to overcome the problems are: coordinating with other school teachers related to difficulties in creating learning documents; finding information related to implementation of 2013 Curriculum in internet or other media; requiring workshop and training related to implementation of 2013 Curriculum; and creating module in the form of handout as the suplementary book; and (5) students’ achievement on writing shows that 95.08% of 61 students have scores above passing grade determined by school, which is 76. From research findings above, it can be concluded that teachers composed the learning documents and the teaching and learning process are developed based on theory of scientific approach. However, there are still many difficulties in implementating 2013 Curriculum and it needs strategies to overcome it. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) menganalisis dokumen pembelajaran apakah dikembangkan sesuai dengan Kurikulum 2013 atau tidak; (2) menganalisis proses pembelajaran apakah dikembangkan berdasarkan teori pendekatan ilmiah atau tidak; (3) mendeskripsikan kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh guru dalam implementasi Kurikulum 2013 di kelas menulis; (4) mendeskripsikan strategi dalam mengatasi masalah dalam implementasi Kurikulum 2013 di kelas menulis; dan (5) mendeskripsikan pencapaian menulis siswa terutama dalam teks recount. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah studi kasus yang dilaksanakan pada siswa kelas 8 SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu di bulan April sampai Juni 2015. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan teknik observasi, interview dan menganalisis data yang terkumpul dalam bentuk RPP, silabus, buku, lembar kerja siswa, nilai siswa, hasil kuesioner, dll. Hasil penelitian ini adalah: (1) dokumen pembelajaran seperti silabus, RPP, materi pembelajaran, dan evaluasi siswa dikembangkan berdasarkan Kurikulum 2013; (2) proses pembelajaran dikembangkan berdarkan teori pendekatan ilmiah, tetapi tidak semua langkah dilaksanakan dalam proses pembelajaran; (3) kesulitan yang dihadapi guru dalam implementasi Kurikulum 2013 adalah: menyusun dokumen pembelajaran, terutama RPP; kesulitan dalam mengimplementasikan pendekatan ilmiah terutama langkah bertanya dan mengkomunikasikan; mengimplementasikan pembelajaran yang berbasis siswa dengan sebaik-baiknya; menggunakan buku WERB karena buku ini tidak menyediakan materi pembelajaran yang cukup; mengajar menulis; dan kesulitan dalam format penilaian siswa; (4) strategi-strategi guru dalam mengatasi masalah adalah: berkoordinasi dengan guru sekolah lain yang berkaitan dengan kesulitan dalam membuat dokumen pembelajaran; mencari informasi yang berkaitan dengan implementasi Kurikulum 2013 di internet atau media lain; mengikuti pelatihan yang berkaitan dengan implementasi Kurikukulum 2013; dan menyusun modul sebagai buku tambahan; dan (5) pencapaian siswa dalam menulis menunjukkan bahwa 95,08% dari 61 siswa memiliki nilai di atas KKM sekolah, yaitu 76. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian di atas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa guru telah menyusun dokumen pembelajaran dan proses pembelajaran dikembangkan berdasarkan teori pendekatan ilmiah, Namun, masih ada beberapa kesulitan dalam implementasi Kurikulum 2013 dan membutuhkan strategi untuk mengatasinya.
