    Abstract

    One of the important parameters of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is tool geometry. Tool is used to heat and move the workpiece material to produce joints. The heat generation caused by the friction between tool and workpiece can achieved maximum temperature of 80% of the melting point of the workpiece material. The grain size of the workpiece material in FSW is affected by the increasement of the temperature distribution. The modeling of temperature distribution had been applied to determine the effects of shoulder diameter and pin shape. Three different positions of tool had been investigate with ANSYS Fluent to predict the distribution of temperature in FSW. The highest temperature on the advance side (AD) was produced by the 21 mm shoulder diameter and the pentagonal pin. The value of the temperature distribution was increasing in line with the increase in the size of shoulder diameter and the number of sides of the pin.
