    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Argumentative skill for students is very important to teach because this skill push students to present critical thinking. The element of argumentation is claim, evidence and reasoning. The element of argumentation is unite and can’t separate. This research aims to know (1) the change of students’ argumentative skill through instructional design implementation based levels of inquiry and assessment for learning on cell material and (2) the profile of students’ argumentative skill on cell material. This research was a classroom action research with two cycles. The subjects of this research were the eleventh grade students of science in Karanganyar State Senior High School in Academic Year of 2016/2017. Targets of the research are improving student engagement and student’s argumentative skill. The result of the study showed that (1) there were changes on student’s argumentative skill once levels of inquiry approach and assessment for learning approach were applied. The number of students who were unable to deliver the arguments were decreasing; (2) there were changes on students’ argumentative skill profile on cell material. The students had already had enough skills in composing the argument. Keywords: argumentative skill, levels of inquiry, assessment for learning
