    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Ester Lia Amanda, D0212041, DAILY COMMUNICATION PATTERNS ELDERLY IN A NURSING HOME (Case Study On Daily Life Elderly Communication Patterns With Fellow Elderly and Caregivers in Nursing Home Dharma Bhakti Surakarta 2016). The bustle of family members, don’t have a family, and the state of the economy can’t afford, become an often reason why elderly people living in nursing homes and separate with those closest to them. Elderly phase is a phase which is identical to the physical and psychological conditions are declining. Elderly living in nursing homes in demand to adjust, one of which is by way of communicating. The purpose of this study was to determine how the daily communication patterns of elderly with fellow elderly and caregivers at Nursing Home Dharma Bhakti Surakarta in 2016, and the barriers that exist when the communication process occurs. The theory that used in this research is the theory of interpersonal communication patterns of Joseph A. DeVito, this communication tell about the habit pattern communicator and communicant in communication, message delivered, and how the communication process occurs. This study is a qualitative research with case study method. Data collection techniques in this study using the technique of in-depth interview, as the primary data source. In the sampling, using purposive sampling technique, namely the elderly living in nursing homes Dharma Bhakti Surakarta in accordance with predetermined criteria. Analysis of the data in this study using data analysis interactive model of Miles and Huberman, namely: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. After analyzing the data, the results of this study indicate that the habit of the elderly as a communicator is to choose his interlocutor, put themselves, get closer and understand the interlocutor. As a communicant elderly will select a received message, respond to the message according to their ability to implement. Messages which became the topic of conversation with the elderly fellow is elderly’s experience before, information about activities in a nursing home, jokes. While the caregiver is a message containing information about the needs and complaints of the elderly. The process of communication between elderly and caregivers with their fellow goes well, they communicate when assembled and relaxing time. Perceived barriers when communicating with each other elderly people is decreasing function of the sense of hearing, indifference, and taciturnity elderly. Barriers obstructing the elderly communicating with caregivers is a flurry of caregivers and the elderly cheekily feel.
