    Abstract

    The problems addressed in this research were: (1) what are the forms of code switching and code mixing in Serial Mulih Ndeso by Suryadi WS? (2) what are the functions of code switching and code mixing in Serial Mulih Ndeso by Suryadi WS? And (3) what factors does contribute to the appearance of code switching and code mixing in Serial Mulih Ndeso by Suryadi WS? The objectives of research were: (1) to describe the forms of code switching and code mixing in Serial Mulih Ndeso by Suryadi WS, (2) to describe the functions of code switching and code mixing in Serial Mulih Ndeso by Suryadi WS, and (3) to describe the factors contributing to the appearance of code switching and code mixing in Serial Mulih Ndeso by Suryadi WS. This study was a descriptive qualitative research using sociolinguistic approach. The data source of research was a serial entitled Mulih Ndesa by Suryadi WS contained regularly in Javanese language magazine, Panjebar Semangat, from edition Nos. 27 (July 4, 2015) to 52 (December 26, 2015), consisting of 26 episodes contained successively. The method of collecting data used in this research was listening one with participatory speaking-listening and recording techniques. The data analysis was carried out using distributional and matching methods. The method of presenting the result of data analysis used in this research was informal presentation one. Considering the result of analysis, it could be concluded that the utterances in serial Mulih Ndeso contained internal code switching including: (1) code switching from Krama to Ngoko Javanese language varieties, (2) code switching from Ngoko to Krama Javanese language varieties; it also contained the external code switching including: (1) code switching from Javanese to Arabic language. The form of code mixing found was insertion of: (1) word, (2) phrase, (3) repetition, (4) baster, (5) clause. The functions of code switching in serial Mulih Ndesa were: (1) respecting the speaking partner (listener), (2) generating the sense of humor, (3) changing an official into unofficial situation, and (4) showing surprise. The functions of code mixing were (1) to respect the speaking partner or object discussed, (2) to facilitate communication, (3) to be more prestigious, (4) to show self-identity, and (5) to convince the speaking partner. The factors contributing to the appearance of code switching and code mixing in serial Mulih Ndesa were: speaker, speaking partner, speech situation, speech topic (theme) and objective.
