    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Aisah Kusumaning Arum, G0011009, Senyum Indrakila, Widardo, 2016. Correlation between Body Height and Myopia in The Students of SMA Negeri 1 Surakarta. Mini Thesis. Faculty of Medicine, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. Background: Body height is one of the anthropometric measurements and the monitors of growth. The interaction between genetic and environmental factors and body height can cause axial length elongation of the eye to myopia. As a part of adolescent growth, the students of senior high schools are the people with high risk of myopia. The aim of this research is to investigate the correlation between body height and myopia in the students of SMA Negeri 1 Surakarta. Methods: This research used the observational analytic study with cross-sectional design. The data were collected from 40 students of SMA Negeri 1 Surakarta in October, 2016. The independent variable of this research was body height which was measured with microtoise. The dependent variable of this research was myopia which was examined by autorefractometer and calculated as spherical equivalent (SE). After collecting the data, all the variables were analyzed using the Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: The mean of body height was 166.67±4.77 cm in male students and 155.94±5.83 cm in female students. The mean of spherical equivalent (SE) of right eyes was -2.63±0.79 D in male students and -3.56±1.40 D in female students. The mean of spherical equivalent (SE) of left eyes was -2.33±0.66 D in male students and -3.60±1.60 D in female students. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient did not show the significant correlation between body height and myopia both in male students (the right eyes: p=0.431, r=0.401 and left eyes: p=0.389, r=0.435) and in female students (the right eyes: p=0.928, r=0.016 and the left eyes: p=0.133, r=0.263). Conclusions: This study found no significant positive correlation between body height and myopia in students of SMA Negeri 1 Surakarta. Keywords : body height, myopia, senior high school students
