    Abstract

The present study seeks to (1) describe pattern sequence of several functions of Adv in Indonesian simple declarative sentences, (2) specify and clarify semantic roles of Adv in Indonesian simple declarative sentences, (3) find out combination of patterns of Adv in Indonesian simple declarative sentences, (4) to explain whether or not an information change is present provided that the pattern sequence is modified, and (5) to explain the proximity of prepositions as Adv markers and constituent of P in the sentences. If some emphatic prepositions exist, the consistency of the sequence to obtain the information conveyed by the head of clause will be observed. The study belongs to a descriptive qualitative study. The data sources of the study include both written and oral forms. The former are taken from national print newspapers, while the latter are from the researcher herself regarding her linguistic intuition. The data comprise Indonesian simple declarative sentences in written expressions having several functions of K which follow P. They were then analyzed using such methods aspadan (identity) and distribusi (distribution) with such techniques as permutasi (permutation), lesap (deletion), ganti (substitution), andperluas (extension). The analysis results demonstrate that (1) there are 10 types of functions of Adv related to predicate verbs in Indonesian simple declarative sentences, including locative, temporal, methodical, instrumental, agentive, final/ goal, commitative, benefactive, and causal, (2) there are 9 combined types in the use of 2 functions of Adv and 34 combined types in the use of 3 functions of Adv, (3) a modification of pattern sequence of functions of Adv with such types of verbs as transitive, intransitive, and ditransitive leads to the presence of ambiguous information, disconnected information, as well as unclear one, (4) some emphatic prepositions serving as Adv markers strongly associated with locative verbs and verbs of spatial transition such as preposition ‘di’ indicating a location and ‘ke’ showing spatial transition are found. Keywords: Functions of Adv, locative, temporal, commitative, methodical, instrumental, benefactive, transitive, and intransitive
