    Abstract

    The research goal is to investigate the influence of fiber volume fraction and fiber length concern to phisical characteristic and composit mechanism of coconut fiber-polyester accompanying the process of Resin Transfer Molding (RTM). Principal substance of this research is fiber parts of coconut, resin polyster and hardener MEKSPO. The process of composit fabrication is to do by using RTM process with pressure up to vacum -30 kPa. In this research, fiber volume fraction are 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% variated. The examanation process of bending, impak, and density for each other refers to ASTM D6272, ASTM D4812, and ASTM D792. Density of fiber parts of coconut and polyester respectively are 1.116 gr/cm³ and 1.065 gr/cm³. The linkage quality between fiber and matrix can be learnt using the macro picture and SEM picture into fracture surface of bending. The result indicates that bending strenght increasing up to a row with the increasing of fiber volume fraction and fibrous length addition. The strenght of impak amounts 21.02 kJ/m² which is achieved at fiber volume fraction 25% with fiber length of 20 mm. The density amounts 1.161 gr/cm³ which is achieved at fiber volume fraction 25% with fiber length of 20 mm. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menyelidiki pengaruh fraksi volum dan panjang serat terhadap sifat fisis dan mekanis komposit serat sabut kelapa-polyester dengan proses Resin Transfer Molding (RTM). Bahan utama penelitian adalah serat sabut kelapa, resin polyester, dan hardener MEKSPO. Proses pembuatan komposit dilakukan dengan menggunakan proses RTM dengan tekanan vacum -30 kPa. Pada penelitian ini, fraksi volum serat divariasi 10%, 15%, 20% dan 25%. Prosedur pengujian bending, impak, dan densitas masing-masing mengacu pada ASTM D6272, ASTM D4812, dan ASTM D792. Densitas pada serat sabut kelapa dan polyester masing-masing yaitu 1,116 gr/cm3 dan 1,065 gr/cm3. Kualitas ikatan antara serat dan matrik dipelajari menggunakan foto makro dan foto SEM permukaan patah bending. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kekuatan bending meningkat seiring dengan peningkatan fraksi volum serat dan penambahan panjang serat. Kekuatan bending sebesar 46,78 MPa dicapai pada fraksi volum serat 25% dengan panjang serat 20 mm. Kekuatan impak sebesar 21,02 kJ/m2 diperoleh pada fraksi volum serat 25% dengan panjang serat 20 mm. Densitas sebesar 1,076 gr/cm3 diperoleh pada fraksi volum serat 25% dengan panjang serat 20 mm.
