Diction, Language Style, Imagery, and Value of Character Education in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye and Its Relevance to Indonesian Language Learning at Senior Secondary School. Thesis: Supervisor I: Prof. Dr. Sumarlam, M.S. Supervisor II: Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, S.S., M. Hum., Ph.D. The Master’s Degree Program in Indonesian Language Education, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. ABSTRACT The objectives of this research are to describe and explain: (1) the diction selection and utilization in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye, (2) the language style utilization in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye, (3) imagery utilization in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye, (4) the value of character education in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye, and (5) the relevance of Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye to the Indonesian Language learning at Senior Secondary School. This research used a qualitative descriptive research with stylistic approach strategy and content analysis method. The sources of the data were Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye and informants. Its data were collected through three techniques, namely: (1) bibliographic technique, (2) reference technique, and (3) recording technique. They were validated with the data triangulation and analyzed with the interactive model of analysis, consisting of three components, namely: (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) conclusion. The results of this research are as follows: (1) the uniqueness of diction selection and utilization Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye lies in the form of (a) denotation, (b) connotation, (c) concrete word, and (d) foreign language vocabulary. The most dominant diction in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye is denotation. (2) There are seventeen language styles in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye, namely: (a) allegory, (b) allusion, (c) anticlimax, (d) antithesis, (e) asyndeton, (f) hyperbola, (g) climax, (h) correction, (i) metaphor, (j) paradox, (k) personification, (l) pleonasm, (m) polysyndeton, (n) repetition, (o) rhetoric, (p) simile, and (q) synecdoche. The most dominant language style in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye is asyndeton. (3) There are five imageries in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye, namely: (a) vision, (b) audition, (c) motion, (d) tacticion, and (e) olfaction. The most dominant imagery in the Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye is vision. (4) There are sixteen character education values delivered in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye namely: (a) love of peace, (b) love of country, (c) to be democratic, (d) discipline, (e) to like to read, (f) honesty, (g) hard work, (h) to be communicative/friendly, (i) creativity, (j) self-independence, (k) environmental-care, (l) social-care, (m) curiosity, (n) to be religious, (o) responsibility, and (p) tolerance. The most dominant character education values in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye are to be communicative/friendly and social-care. (5) There is a relevance in character education values in Novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye as a material of literature learning at Senior Secondary School because this Novel is rich of counsels and advices in correspondence with character education values.
