    Abstract

Automotive vehicle Brake Pad on the market are divided into two types. The types of brake pad are an OEM (original equipment manufactured), OES (original equipment spare parts) and AM (aftermarket). This type of vehicle in brake pad use is also divided into two, passenger and commercial vehicles. The price difference on each brake pad is caused by the chemical composition that affect the friction characteristics and production cost. This experiment aimed to compare the friction characteristics and chemical composition of brake pad OES and AM type in passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles. Each of brake pad was cut and used as a specimen and hardness tested with brinell machine. Specimens brake that has been cut tested violance brinel, SEM-EDS and tasted with tribometer machine type pin on disc. As a result, brake passenger OES type containing filler metal are Cu and Fe which caused the friction coefficient become more stable with increasing load and speed than AM type. While on the brake pad commerce, both have a friction coefficient which almost equal. Moreover, a low wear rate indicates a high hardness value. Except brake pad passenger OES type, all types containing asbestos materials that are hazardous for health.
