    Abstract

The basis of this research is the increasingly tight level of competition in the handicraft industry in Surakarta during the year 2010. The purpose of this study was to determine the market structure of the handicraft industries in Surakarta viewed from the level of income, to determine the performance of the handicraft industries in Surakarta seen from the economic rates of return and profit margin, and to know the relationship between the market structure and the performance of handicraft industries in the city of Surakarta. The study was a descriptive study using survey method. The sampling method is to use saturated sampling techniques, resulting in the respondents, 56 businesses. The analytical technique used is the concentration ratio and Herfindahl index. The economic rentability and profit margin are used to determine the performance of handicraft industries . In finding the relationship between the market structure and the performance, a correlational test of Pearson Product Momment method was used. The results of data analysis showed that the concentration ratio of the four largest firms (CR-4) is amounted to 41.80% by value of Herfindahl Index of 5.95%. Based on the results of correlation, it is known that the relationship between the variables of income with economic rentability have a significant relationship due to the fact that the value of r is 0.482. In addition, between the revenue variable and the profit margins, there is a significant relationship in which the r value is amounted to 0.278. Based on the finding the researcher put forward some suggestions as follows: a) It is better for the industry to diversify its product; b)Companies need to cooperate with one another because if the industry is dominated by several large companies only, the price will tend to rise; c) Production efficiency and the use of technology should be intensively made; d)There must also be efficiency in resource allocation, efficiency in product distribution, and creative marketing techniques through non-price competition such as quality, convenience, and brand promotion. The higher the economic profitability, the higher the level of efficient use of capital. And the higher the profit margin, the more efficient operation of the company will be.
