    Abstract

    Every individual has a freedom of expressing opinion, while mass media has a freedom of diffusing opinion. Writing opinion article in mass media is one of caring and social responsibility forms corresponding to the principle of Indonesian democracy providing the freedom of voicing, arguing and expression. Through writing opinion article to newspaper, the public contributes to thinking of the problems occurring in social sphere. LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) issue is a social problem spoken widely in Indonesia today. It is because the norm prevailing in Indonesia is still replete with cultural and religious effect proscribing LGBT behavior. On the other hand, some scientific researches conducted found that homosexual is a genetic behavior and is not a disease. It makes LGBT activists urging the government to recognize the rights of LGBT in Indonesia. Considering the presence of such different perspectives, mass media through the content of article contained very potentially affects the public’s mindset in treating pros- and cons LGBT in Indonesia. The objective of research was to find out how the discourse of LGBT minority group existence in Indonesia is presented in Opinion article of Republika and Kompas dailies in editions of February-March 2016. This study was a descriptive qualitative. Technique of collecting data used was documentation. The sampling technique used in this research was purposive sampling, and the sample employed was opinion article about the existence of LGBT in Indonesia in Republika and Kompas dailies edition February-March 2016. The method of analyzing data used was data triangulation. The theory employed was mass communication, because the element of communication studied in this research was the message distributed through mass media. The result of research conducted using discourse analysis showed that both mass media had difference in the message contained. Republika presented opinion article tending to feature the proponent of LGBT unfavorably. Meanwhile, Kompas daily featured opinion article using language style and diction tending to represent the bad image of community groups and policies contra LGBT behavior.
