    Abstract

    Introduction: Acute Renal Failure is a syndrome in the nephrology field which showed an escalation in the last 15 years. Acute renal failure will be followed by a decrease in glomerular filtration which can be seen with high levels of blood urea nitrogen. Renal damage can be caused by medicine such as paracetamol which is often used in Indonesia. This Renal damage can be repaired with antioxidant such as antioxidant contained in dragon fruit peel extract. This study was aimed to determine the effect of red dragon peel extract (Hylocereus costaricensis) on blood urea nitrogen (BUN) level in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) with paracetamol induction. Methods: This study was a laboratory experimental research with pretest and posttest control design. The subjects were male Wistar Rattus norvegicus h divided into two groups, each consisted of 16 rats. The firsts group received 100mg / 200g BW doses of paracetamol everyday for 3 days starting on the 1st day until the 3rd day and then received 36.5mg / 200g BW dragon fruit peel extracts everyday for 10 days on the 4th day until the 13th day. The second group received the same dose of paracetamol and 73mg / 200g BW dragon fruit peel extract everyday for 10 days on the 4th day until 13th day. The blood sample for pretest was taken on the 4th day and for posttest was taken on the 13th day, the blood sample was taken through orbital venous plexus and used to measure levels of the blood urea nitrogen with spectrophotometry. The data was analyzed with Paired T Test Results: The BUN of the first group was 21.56 ± 0.65 mg/dL on the pretest and 23.23 ± 0.65 mg/dL on the posttest. The BUN of the second group was 22.30 ± 0.65mg/dL on the pretest and 21.67 ±0.81 mg/dL on the posttest . In the first group, the BUN levels showed a significant change with p = 0.031 while the second groups did not show a significant change with p = 0.562 Conclusion: The results of this research showed that red dragon fruit peel extract (Hylocereus costaricensis) on the dose of 36.5 mg/200g BW gave a significant increase on on levels of blood urea nitrogen and on the doses of 73mg/200g BW did not give a significant decrease on levels of blood urea nitrogen wistar rat(Rattus norvegicus) induced-paracetamol.
