    Abstract

This research is a correlation study attempt to find out if there is a correlation between Google Search use and the gratification obtained by communication science major student year 2005 of FISIP UNS. Variables in this research are: antecedent variable which is motive in using Google Search (z), independent variable which is Google Search use (x), and dependant variable which is gratification obtained after using Google Search. Hypothesis in this research are: there is a significant correlation between motives in using Google Search by communication science major student year 2005 of FISIP UNS and there is a significant correlation between Google Search use and the gratification obtained by communication science major student year 2005 of FISIP UNS. This research is an explanatory research that emphasize on explaining correlation between variables thru hypothesis testing. Research method in this research is survey method. Survey research is a research that takes samples from a population and use questioner as main data collecting tool. This research gives questioner to 51 samples from 104 total populations. Questioner distribution based on Yamane equation with 10% precision and 90% thrust level. To test the hypothesis, this research use Spearman’s Rank Correlation. This statistic measure the correlation between two variables or more which make it possible for the object of research to be stratified. Because of the sample are more than 30, so coefficient of correlation needs to be tested with student critical value (t) from the table. From the data analysis, we know that there is a weak correlation between motive and Google Search use by communication science major student year 2005 of FISIP UNS. Rs = 0,35825 included in moderate positive association with t = 2,686. On the second hypothesis, this research find that there is a weak correlation between Google Search use and the gratification obtained by communication science major student year 2005 of FISIP UNS. From data analysis, rs = 0,31506 included in moderate positive association with t = 2,3538. These weak associations are mostly caused by a low standard of questioner. Questions in the questioner, some of them, are not suitable with the main purpose of Google Search use which is as an information source.
