    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Fitri Susilorini, 2007. SYNTHESIS COPOLY(EUGENYL OXYACETIC ACID- DVB) IMPREGNATED 5’-CHLORO-2,4,2’-TRIHYDROXYAZO BENZENE. Thesis. Departement of Chemistry. Mathematic and Science Faculty. Sebelas Maret University. Synthesis of Copoly(eugenyl oxyacetic acid-DVB) had been done by cationic copolymerization reaction between eugenyl oxyacetat acid and DVB with catalyst BF3O(C2H5)2. This copolymer was expected as cation exchanger resins material. Copoly (eugenyl oxyacetic acid-DVB) needed a modification to increase the effectivity as a cation exchanger. The increasing of resins effectivity was done by ionophore impregnation. Synthesis of eugenyl oxyacetic acid was done with Williamson eterification reaction of eugenol, NaOH, and chloroacetic acid. Cationic copolymerization of eugenyl oxyacetic acid and DVB catalyzed by BF3O(C2H5)2 was done at temperature 40-500 C, using benzene medium under nitrogen atmosphere. Analysis structure of eugenyl oxyacetic acid was determined with FTIR, 1 H NMR and GC-MS. While analysis of copoly(eugenyl oxyacetic acid- DVB) was done with FTIR, and viscometry method for determination of its relative molecular weight. Copolymer were impregnated with ionophore 5’- chloro-2,4,2’-trihydroxyazobenzene. Analysis of impregnated resins was done with FTIR. The test of cation exchange capacity of copolymer was done to cation Cu2+ . Analysis of cation exchange was done with AAS. Synthesis of eugenyl oxyacetic acid yields 49.30% white needle-shape crystal. Synthesis of Copoly (eugenyl oxyacetic acid-DVB) yields 36.91% brown gel and the relative molecular weight was 179843. The cation exchange capacity of impregnated copolymer was 550.14 meq kation Cu2+ /1 g copolymer.
