    Abstract

Introduction: Otitis media is an inflammation of the mucosa of some or all of the middle ear, Eustachian tube, mastoid anthrum and mastoid cells. Exposure to cigarette smoke can cause malfunctioning of cilia in the respiratory epithelium, forming excessive mucus that causes blockage of the Eustachian tube. Eustachian tube blockage allows the invasion of germs into the middle ear and inflammation occurs. This study aimed to determine the association between secondhand cigarette smoke exposure with the occurrence of acute otitis media in children. Methods: This study is observational analytic study with case-control approach conducted in October to December 2016. The subjects were students in five kindergartens in Jebres divided into two groups consisted of those with acute otitis media and the control group. The total 96 subjects were taken using purposive sampling method. Acute otitis media is determined by ear examination. The data was tested by chi-square test (x2) for the bivariate analysis. Results: Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between secondhand exposure to cigarette smoke with the occurrence of acute otitis media in children with p value <0.05 (adenoid hypertrophy (p = 0.003)) and Odds Ratio (OR) = 3.656. Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between secondhand exposures to cigarette smoke with the occurrence of acute otitis media in children. The risk of acute otitis media in children exposed to secondhand cigarette smoke is higher than not exposed to smoke. Keywords: acute otitis media, secondhand cigarette smoke, children
