    Abstract

    ADE LINTANG NARARIYA, D0212002. HUMOUR AND VIRALITY OF MEMES (Quantitative Content Analysis of Styles of Humour, Types of Humour, and Virality of Memes on Instagram Account @Dagelan Period 01-31 January 2016). Thesis (S-1). Communication Science Program. Faculty of Social and Politics Science. Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret Surakarta. 2016. Humour is one of the most important element of communications. Through the years of innovative discovery in the world, humour has appeared as new phenomenon in the new media channel supported by internet, called meme (-read mim).This research analyzes humorous memes in one of the biggest social media used by Indonesian, Instagram. This research uses styles of humour theory by Martin and friends, which are affiliative, aggressive, self-defeating, and self-enhancing, this research also uses types of humour theory by Reick which was refined by Catanescu and Tom, exaggeration, pun, sarcasm, sillines, surprise, comparison and personification, and also virality theory by Alhabash and McAlister which are viral reach, message deliberation and affective evaluation. This research tries to find out types and styles of humour which is most frequently used by users at @Dagelan. This research also tries to find out whether any styles of humour, any types of humour, and any combination of both has significant effect to virality. 246 memes have been chosen from @Dagelan by systematic random sampling, and tested using Chi Square and one-way ANOVA statistic. The result shows that affiliative style of humour, sarcasm type of humour, and combination of aggressive-silliness humour are the most frequent category shown by memes at @Dagelan. The next result shows that none of any styles, any types and any combination of both of humour has significant effect to virality of memes on Instagram Account @Dagelan. .
