    Abstract

    Puput Yulianti Kis Putranti, D0210091, THE USES OF SOCIAL MEDIA PATH AND INSTAGRAM AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE, Thesis (S-1), Department of Communication Studies, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta, 2016 Young people active using social media Path dan Instagram until it can be said as social media addiction. Conditions that make they cannot be separated from their handphone (nomophobia), internet connection, charger, powerbank, and cause the blurry face of private and publicsphere. This study aims to figure out the phenomenon of young people active using Path and Instagram by examine ‘how’ and ‘why’ individual do that. This qualitative study through theory of uses and gratification to understand active user select their media and the expectation of media effects. Current study have focused on media selection and gratifications obtained resulting from using Path and Instagram. Data were gathered via in-depth interview. The sampling was conducted through purposive sampling to six informants were classified as active users with criteria: 1) Path and Instagram users that they account accessible by researcher; 2) college students or fresh graduated between the ages of 19-25 which have Path and Instagram account at least one year; 3) active on Path and Instagram in the last three months; and 4) at least 30 moments uploaded on Path and five photos uploaded on Instagram (over one last month). The result showed that Path and Instagram use together by young people for fulfilling their different needs, private and public. These two were complementary, cannot be separated using only one of them. Nine social media gratifications identified in this study: privacy, self-expression, self-documentation, maintaining friendships, socializing, main source information, closer to public figures, popularity and entertainment. Among these ninth, young people have been found to depend heavily on the social media as well. Keywords: young people, social media, path, instagram, uses and gratification
