    Abstract

    Septyana Dewi. K4312061. IMPROVEMENT OF STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILLS THROUGH APPLICATION OF DISCOVERY LEARNING MODEL IN BIOLOGY AT GRADE XI SCIENCE CLASS 4 SMA NEGERI 4 SURAKARTA. Bachelor Thesis, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta. November 2016. The purpose of this research is to improve the writing skills of students of Class XI 4 SMAN 4 Surakarta through the application of the model discovery. The research is an Classroom Action Research (CAR) include 3 cycles with each cycle includes planning, execution and observation and reflection. Subjects were students of class XI MIPA 4 SMAN 4 Surakarta academic year 2015/2016, which is 31 students, with 18 female students and 13 male students. The research instrument uses the rubric writing skills by Mclean (2012), viewed from the aspect of content and context. Data obtained through observation, interviews and documentation. Data validation using triangulation method. Data analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis that includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of research for the students’ writing skills analysis from the aspect of quality of content and context. The results of the analysis of the quality of the content and context of the students’ writing in the application of discovery learning models implemented in cycle I, second cycle and third cycle showed a fluctuate result. The quality of the content and context of the writing of learners showed a shift in scores compared to precycle. Content quality of students’ writing identified on level 1 in precycle/cycle I/II cycle/cycle III: a score 2 and score 3/score 2, score 3 and score 4/score 3 and score 4/score 3 and score 4. Quality of student’s writing context learners identified at level 1 at precycle: score 2 and a score 3. The quality of the writing on the context identified on level 1 of the cycle, second cycle and third cycle: score 1, score 2, score 3, score 4, and a score of 5. Based on research data concluded that the application of the discovery learning can improve the writing skills of students class XI MIPA 4 SMA Negeri 4 Surakarta.
