    Abstract

    Active packaging is a concept packaging which the package material contains compounds that specifically added to extend the shelf life of the product. Active packaging made from paper has several advantages compared by plastics such as biodegradable, lower cost and better permeability. Oleoresin from cinnamon bark distillation waste has antimicrobial compounds such as cinnamaldehyde and benzoate acid. So far, there was no research about active paper packaging contains oleoresin by distillation waste of cinnamon bark, which is applied for fruits product particularly on dragon fruit. Therefore the aim of this research was to determine the effectiveness of active paper packaging contains oleoresin by cinnamon bark distillation waste to delay postharvest deterioration in dragon fruit. Dragon fruit was evaluated in characteristic of the physical (color, weight loss, and firmness), chemical (pH, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids), and microbiological (total plate count) monitored for 15 days. Five different coverings of the active paper were observed: without active paper as control sample, wrapping with active paper on the entire surface of the fruit, the wall of the box was covered with active paper, only the bottom of the box was covered with active paper, and pieces of active paper on the sidelines. Dragon fruits were maintained in a box as secondary packaging and stored at an ambient temperature. The experimental design used in this study was Complete Random Design (CRD) with one factor that was the variations of active paper packaging. The results showed that active paper packaging with addition of oleoresin by cinnamon bark distillation waste was effective in preserving color, weight loss, firmness of surface, pH, total acid and total microbial of dragon fruit. The best result showed by wrapping with active paper on the entire surface of the fruit rather than other variations.
