Abstract
Friction stir welding (FSW) is an alternative aluminium welding process in which the process is using the milling machine. The aim of this research is to study the effect of preheating temperature and welding speed in friction stir welding process on the mechanical properties and micro structure of weld joint on 5052-H32 aluminium alloy. The milling machine was operated in 1125 rpm on spindle rotation, with various of welding speed at 40mm/minutes, 60mm/minutes and 80mm/minutes and 3.85mm on tool depth of plunge. Preheating proccess is using tool heatgun with temperature variation from 150°C, 200°C, 250°C, and 300°C. The welding tool material was Bohler K100 and hardened up to 59 HRc in flatten 3 shape. The tests in this study were tensile test, face bending test, root bending test, hardness test, observation on macro photo and micro structure. The test results showed that the highest tensile strength, face bending, root bending strength and hardness occurred on the welding specimen with 250ºC preheating temperature and 60mm/min welding speed. Further, on the hardness test showed that averagely retreating side area hada higher hardness than advancing side. On the micro stucture, the smaller grain size of nugget occurred on the welding specimen with 250ºC preheating temperature and 60mm/min welding speed.
