    Abstract

    This study was aimed to describe geometry skill according to van Hiele levels of geometric understanding in students with high, medium and low category of creativity. This is a qualitative study in six students of VIII H SMP Negeri 3 Kartasura which consisted of two students with high creativity, two students with medium creativity and two students with low creativity. We used purposive sampling to determine study subjects. Data were collected using written test and interview. Triangulations of times and methods were used to obtain data validity. Data analysis technique used in this study comprises data collection, data reduction, data presentation and verification. Study results show that geometry skills according to van Hiele levels for students in high creativity category encompass: (1) visual skill is at level 2, students can identify shapes, mention the name of shapes, mention the characteristics, and group the shapes based on the relation among several shapes; (2) verbal skill is at level 1, students can constitute definition by listing mathematical characteristics of shapes, (3) drawing skill is at level 2, students can draw shapes accurately, translate verbal information in a drawing using its characteristics, and conctruct certain shapes when given other related shapes, (4) logical skill is at level 1, students can mention several similarities and differences among shapes due to their characteristics, (5) applied skill is at level 2, students can mention things around them which belong to certain type of shape, apply shape’s characteristics in daily life, and understand mathematics model concept that associated to shape’s characteristics. Geometry skills according to van Hiele levels for students in medium creativity category encompass: (1) visual skill is at level 0, students can identify and mention the name of shapes, (2) verbal skill is at level 0, students can only constitute definition associated with physical description of shapes, (3) drawing skill is at level 0, students can draw shapes accurately, (4) logical skill is at level 0, students can mention several similarities and differences among shapes, (5) applied skill is at level 0, students can mention things around them which belong to certain type of shape. Geometry skills according to van Hiele levels for students in low creativity category encompass: (1) visual skill is at level 0, students can identify and mention the name of shapes, (2) verbal skill is at level 0, students only constitute definition associated with physical description of shapes, (3) drawing skill is at level 0, students can draw shapes accurately, (4) logical skill is at level 0, students can mention several similarities and differences among shapes (5) applied skill is at level 0, students can mention things around them which belong to certain type of shape.
