    Abstract

    The aim of this research is to study the effect of pin profile and preheating temperature on mechanical properties and microstucture of 5052-H32 aluminium alloy join on friction stir welding. FSW process uses milling machine, the tool material is Bohler K100 steel with hardness 59HRc and preheating method using heat gun. Parameter machine are used rotation of welding tool 1125 rpm, welding speed 60mm/minute, depth of plunge 3.95mm, tool tilt angle 2°, heater tilt angle 45°, distance between tool and heater 60mm, height heater 20mm, variation of profile pin is cylindrical, 2 flat sides and 3 flat sides, variation of preheating start from 150°C, 200°C, 250°C and 300°C. This experiment are tensile test, bending test, hardness test and observation of macro and micro. Mechanical test results showed that the highest on the tensile and bending found in welds with 3 flat side pin profile and the preheating temperature of 250°C. The microstructure images showed that the grain size on pin profile cylindrical 150o C is bigger than pin profile 3 flat sides 250o C. The average hardness is achieved on pin profile 3 flat sides 250o C is bigger than pin profile cylindrical 150o C.
