    Abstract

    Empirically the average productivity of the corn peasants in Lampung province is 4.99 ton/ha, which is still below the potential productivity, which ranged 7-10 tons/hectare for the soil types in Lampung Province. This corn cultivation requires peasants who must possess entrepreneurial competencies in addition to their mastery of knowledge and managerial techniques of crop cultivation. A peasant with such competencies makes him or her a creative and innovative entrepreneur in the field of agriculture. The objectives of this research are: (1) to study the condition of entrepreneurial competencies of the corn peasants in Lampung province; (2) to study the factors affecting the learning process in the agricultural extension in Lampung province; (3) to study the factors affecting the learning process in the agricultural extension on the entrepreneurial competencies of the corn peasants in Lampung regencies; and (4) to find a model for agricultural extension which is able to improve the entrepreneurial competencies of the corn peasants in Lampung Regency. This research was conducted from July 2014 to August 2014 in Lampung Regency. The samples of research consisted of 214 respondents and determined through the stratified area probability sampling technique. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis and path analysis. The results of research are as follows. 1) The entrepreneurial competencies of the corn peasants in Lampung Regency could be grouped into four types, namely: technical type, managerial type, innovative type, and universal type. 2) The factors of formal education, experience in farming business, work motivation, institutional participation in community, information access, farming business environment, and government’s policies affect the learning process in the agricultural extension. 3) The factors of formal education, work motivation, institutional participation in community, information access, and farming business environment had direct and indirect effects through the learning process in the agricultural extension on the entrepreneurial competencies of the corn peasants in Lampung Regency. 4) Entrepreneurial competency improvement-based agricultural extension model was done by paying attention the influential factors and the types of leadership competencies of the corn peasants.
