    Abstract

Introduction: Hand hygiene is a term that is often used as an attempt to clean hands to avoid nosocomial infections mostly in hospitals because hands are able to mediate the entry of bacteria to human body. In the implementation of hand hygiene, RSUD dr. Moewardi use their own alcohol-based handrub formula. This study observed the effectiveness of handrub formula made by the Pharmacy Department of RSUD dr. Moewardi in decreasing the number of bacteria on hands for the period of the first week up to the fourth week of using the handrub formula. This study was conducted to observe whether there was a decrease in the effectiveness of the handrub formula during the four weeks period. Methods: This study was an analytical observational study with the cross sectional approach. This study was conducted in RSUD dr. Moewardi wards and in the Microbiology Laboratory Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University. This study was conducted once a week for 4 times of observation or from the first week up to the fourth week period with 10 respondents each week and it obtained 40 samples. Samples were taken before and after washing hands using the handrub formula with the hand swab method. Then the samples were incubated in the laboratory for 24 hours and then the amount of the bacteria were calculated and identified. All data would be analyzed statistically using Wilcoxon signed rank test and Kruskall-Wallis test. Results: The result of Wilcoxon test showed that there were decrease of bacteria after washing hands using the handrub formula in the first week up to the fourth week of studies. The result of Kruskall-Wallis test showed that the difference in decrease of bacteria in the four weeks of studies were statistically remain the same and it could be concluded that the handrub formula was effective during the four weeks of usage. Conclusions: The effectiveness of RSUD dr. Moewardi’s handrub formula in decreasing the number of bacteria on hands from the first week up to the fourth week of usage remained the same. Keywords: Effectiveness of RSUD dr. Moewardi’s handrub formula, number of bacteria, period of tim
