    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Lulu Atun Nafisah. THE APPLICATION OF ROLE PLAYING METHOD USING AUDIO VISUAL MEDIA IN IMPROVING MOTIVATION AND LEARNING OUTCOMES OF SOCIAL SCIENCE FOR THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SD NEGERI 1 BRECONG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2015/2016.Thesis, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta.May 2016. The objectives of this research are: (1) to describe the steps on the application of Role Playing methodusing audio visual media, (2) to improve motivation, (3) to improve learning outcomes of social science learning using audio visual media, and (4) to describe problems and solutionson the application of Role Playing methodusing audio visual mediato improve motivation and learning outcomes of social science learning in the academic year of 2015/2016. This research is a collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted within three cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings including planning, action, observation, and reflection. Subjects of the research were 27 students of the fifth grade of SD Negeri 1 Brecong. Sources of data were derived from students, teacher, and document. Techniques of collecting data were questionnaire, observation, interview, test, interview, and documentation. Validity of data in this research was analyzed using triangulation of sources and triangulation of technique. The results of this research show that: (1) the steps of the application of Role Playing methodusing audio visual media was conducted through nine steps, namely: determine the topic or problem and objectives, play video, provide the concept of problem about situation that will be played, observe and guide the role play, instruct students who do not play a role to observe their classmates, group discussion, and draw the conclusion. (2) the application of Role Playing method using audio visual media can improve motivation of students. It was proven by the increase of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation respectively in the first cycle 76.2% and 67.67%, in the second cycle 80.93% and 74.89%, and in the third cycle 85.1% and 81.3%.; (3) the application of Role Playing method using audio visual media can improve learning outcomes of students. It was proven by the increase of learning outcomes of students in the first cycle 76%, in the second cycle 80%, and in the third cycle 96%and (3) the problems encountered in the learning, namely: the teacher pays less attention according to students’ ability in determining a role, students are not good in playing their role, students are not active in asking questions during learning.Solutions for these problems are: the teacher pays more attention the students’ ability in determining a role, students should be better in playing their role, and students are asked to ask questions actively. The conclusion of this research is the application of Role Playing methodusing audio visual media can improve motivation and learning outcomes of the fifth grade studentsin the academic year of 2015/2016.
