    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Nur Fitriah Azimah, D1213052, STREET ART VIA POSTER AS A EXPRESSION OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL ISSUES (A Semiotic Analysis Study in the meaning of Andrew Lumban Gaol "ANTI-TANK" Posters which Expressing Socio-political state of Indonesia via Poster in Yogyakarta’s Public Space), Skripsi, Department of Communication, Faculty of Social and Political Science, Sebelas Maret University, January 2016. Indonesian society has passed through the crimes of Orde Baru’s government which prohibits people’s right to speak up. At that time, anyone who dared to oppose the government will be removed, imprisoned and killed. Now, after exploring the reformation era, everyone (the Indonesian people) has their right to argue. That freedom has an impact on the appearence of diverse cultural expressions as a medium to deliver the aspirations related to socio-political conditions in Indonesia. There is Andrew Lumban Gaol who located in Yogyakarta, he’s using street art as a medium to expressed his ideas. With posters, Andrew expressing social and political conditions in Indonesia through his identity as ANTI-TANK. This study was aimed to discover the meaning of visual symbols in ten ANTI-TANK’s posters that have been scattered in public spaces in Yogyakarta. This descriptive - qualitative research describe ten ANTI-TANK posters through visual symbols were interpreted as signifier and signified, as well as the meaning of denotation and connotation semiotic analysis procedures based on the model of Roland Barthes. The analysis results of this study concluded that ANTI-TANK do propaganda through his posters by processing in techniques and artistic forms through the visual symbols which represented socio-political charge as an expression of resistance and rebellion associated socio-political context in Indonesia.
