    Abstract

    Background: The main source of pollution comes from motor vehicle exhaust emissions which occupies 90% of the total Pb emissions in the atmosphere. Poisoning caused by Pb may result in acute and chronic effects. Acute poisoning can lead to burning of the mouth, the stimulation of the gastrointestinal and accompanied by diarrhea. Chronic poisoning can cause anemia, pain in the abdomen and also lead to paralysis. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation of the levels of lead (Pb) in the number of erythrocytes in gas station workers’ blood in Surakarta. Methods: This research used analytic observational with cross sectional approach. Sampling techniques in this study used sampling total as many as 30 workers, due to the limitations of the study so that the number of samples used were 30 gas station workers. Workers’ blood is taken as 6 ml with the details. 5 ml was used for testing blood Pb and 1 ml was used to test the amount of erythrocyte. Blood lead measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrofotometri (AAS) in the central laboratory of Mathematics and Science, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta and the amount of erythrocytes measured in the Solo Lab laboratory. Statistical test used Product Moment Correlation. Results: Statistical test in this study used Product Moment Correlation with SPSS version 22.0. It is known that the value of p = 0.080, meaning there was no significant correlation between blood lead with the number of erythrocytes at the gas station workers because of lead in the blood of workers are still within safe limits. Conclusions: There was no significant correlation between blood lead in the number of erythrocytes at the gas station workers who are exposed to Pb. Suggestion: Need to do further research to the correlation between blood lead with total erythrocytes. Further researcher should use more number of samples and the volume of blood samples more than 5 ml. Keywords: Pb in Blood, Pb in the Air, The number of erythrocytes
