    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Elizabeth Astika Anindyajati. 2006. THE INFLUENCE OF MELTING BATIK WAX (MALAM) SMOKE ON MICE (Mus musculus L.) TRACHEA AND LUNG ALVEOLI HISTOLOGY STRUCTURE, TOTAL ERYTROCYTE AND HEMOGLOBIN CONCENTRATION. Biology Departement. Mathematics and Natural Science Faculty. Sebelas Maret University. Surakarta. Batik is traditional cloth, which is need the melting process of batik wax (malam) when being made. Melting process will releases iritating chemicals substance such as acrolein, aldehydes, which forms smoke and also release particle which become one of air pollution causes. One of smoke component is gas which can be inhaled into breathing system and then goes to circulation system. The aim of this research is to know the influence of melting malam on mice (Mus musculus L.) trachea and lung alveoli histology structure, total erytrocyte and also hemoglobin concentration. This research was done in 30 days with 4 type experimental treatments, each using 6 mice. Treatment give, i.e : group P0 was the controlled group, group P1 was the group exposed to melting malam smoke for 3 hours every day, group P2 was the group exposed to melting malam smoke for 6 hours every day, and group P3 was the group exposed to melting malam smoke for 9 hours every day. The monitored parameters were trachea histology structure (involve trachea epithelial height, diameter of trachea, and comparative value from diameter of trachea with trachea epithelial height), lung alveoli histology structure (involve diameter of alveoli and septum interalveolaris), total erytrocyte, and hemoglobin concentration. Quantitative data was analyzed by Regression and ANAVA then continued with DMRT (Duncan Multiple Range Test) 5% significance level analysis. Qualitative data was analyzed descriptive comparative. The result of the research showed that melting malam smoke with various of time exposure 3, 6, and 9 hours/day for 30 days cause diameter of trachea enlargement, reduction of epithelial cilia, high comparative value from diameter of trachea with trachea epithelial height, diameter of lung alveoli enlargement, thickness of septum interalveolaris, emfisema, decrease total erytrocyte and hemoglobin concentration. Higher histology changes, decrease total erytrocyte and hemoglobin concentration have shown in group P3. Histology or physiology changes on mice depend on the duration of exposure melting malam smoke.
