    ABSTRACT Naufal Bayutiarno, D0210078, THE COMMUNICATION PATTERN OF OTAKU COMMUNITY IN SURAKARTA (Qualitative Descriptive Study about Communication Pattern of Otaku Community in Surakarta 2015), Thesis (S-1), Department of Communications Science, Faculty of Social and Political Science, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta, September, 2015. Today, in era of globalization, made us enable to take up every single kind of foreign cultures. Start from west until east cultures. Including Japanese culture. The phenomenon of Japanese culture, began to boom in Surakarta society. The lovers of Japanese culture in Indonesia, called an Otaku. Until various otaku’s communities and many events are regularly held. On the other hand, actually otaku means about individuals who really like about something. Someone who can be called a very freak against something. At the same time otaku phenomenon in Surakarta tends to be interpreted as enthusiasts of “jejepangan” stuff. Now, Otaku community is a “vehicle” for the otaku society to communicate with each other. The goal of this research is to look at communication patterns in otaku community. Starting from the communication patterns, interpersonal communication, and group communication of the otaku community. The object of otaku community is Visual Shock Community (VoC) and Vocaloid.Solo. This research is a qualitative research using descriptive method, and located in the Surakarta City. There are five interviewees of otaku communities, running in different paths. VoC active in cosplay, while Vocaloid.Solo active in mixing music. The conclusions of this research are (1) Communication Patterns of Otaku community, VoC in order to introduce Japanese culture, tend to embrace communication pattern in any direction and non-formal. (2) Communication Patterns of Otaku Community, Vocaloid.Solo that tends to exist in cyberpace forum, also remain adhered to communication patterns in all directions and non-formal. (3) Interpersonal Coomunication Patterns that occur in otaku community Vocaloid.Solo, tend to be non-verbal. (4) On the other hand, interpersonal communication patterns in the VoC Community, more likely to use of verbal communication. Keywords: Communication, Otaku, Community, Pattern
