    Abstract

    ABSTRACT Nile tilapia is a freshwater fish species that is more preferable public consumed. To obtain an optimal growth, health fish is the concern of the fish farming, and feed is the main factor. The addition of boiled temulawak ginger water to nile tilapia feed is expected to improve fish health. Temulawak ginger contains curcumin that can increase appetite and have an anti-anemia effect. Fish health may be determined by hematologic examination, particularly on hematocrit level. Higher hematocrit level, healthier the fish.This study aims to determine the effect of boiled temulawak ginger water on the blood components and the growth of nile tilapia fish and determine the optimal concentration which can improve the health and growth effectively. This study used a completely randomized design consisting of 5 different treatments based on the concentration of boiled temulawak ginger water, ie: 0%, 5%, 9%, 13%, and 17%. The treatment was given by spraying 100 ml of boiled temulawak ginger water on 1 kg of nile tilapia feed. Nile tilapia was fed twice a day as much as 3% of fish body weight for 30 days. Fish weight and length were measured on the day first day (after acclimatization) and on the last day of the study. Blood was taken from gills on day 15th of the study. The number of erythrocytes, leukocytes and hematocrit levels were measured then. Data on body weight growth, body length growth and the number of blood components were analyzed statistically by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and followed by Duncan test. The results showed that feeding mixed with boiled temulawak ginger water at concentration of 17% effects on the increase of erythrocyte numbers and hematocrit levels, as well as decrease of the leukocytes numbers. At concentrations below 17%, the effect is the opposite. Nevertheless, these effects are insignificantly. Fish weight is not affected significantly by the treatments. Feeding mixed with boiled temulawak ginger water at concentrations of 13% and 17% affects significantly on the body length even though it is lower than the control group.
