    Abstract

    The tales of Kancil is kind of popular tale among the Javanese people and becomes a controversial discussion. This tale was associated with public deceitfulness behavior which was rampant in the political, economic, legal field, and social life. On the other hand, this tale is regarded as educational media which contains positive values. Apart from that controversy, the tales of Kancil still become collective memories for many people, and until now on it still reproduced through various media. Social representation is a knowledge that developed and growth together amongst the communities to makes them understand the realities. The theory of social representation was used as a framework for mapping the ideas which exists in the Javanese people through the tales of Kancil. The aims of this study are to find out the social representation among Javanese people regarding with the tales of Kancil and the implicit value delivered through this tale. This study was conducted using phenomenographic approach with an openended questionnaire as a measurement tool of the research. The open-ended questionnaire consists of questions using free association technique from words and five elaboration questions. The subject questionnaire comprises 200 Javanese people around 25-60 years old in Surakarta and ex-Surakarta Residency. The result of this study shows that the social representation of Javanese people regarding with tales of Kancil are ideas, values, and the practice of ingenuity concept. The ingenuity grows as an abstract idea and created become more concrete by objectification into the tales of Kancil. The Kancil figure also depicts contradictory things, and sometime it also uses bad normative things. But in general, ingenuity refers to the strategic ways to solve a problem.
