    Abstract

    The effects of the shielding gas and electrical voltage on the mechanical properties of resistance spot welded joint Aluminum AA 5052 have been investigated in this study. Electrode pressure, welding time, and gas flow rate were constantly maintained. Welding processes were conducted with variation of shielding gas including argon gas, carbon dioxide gas and no shielding gas. The welding parameters used were 2.30, 2.67 and 3.20 varied-voltages. The micro and macro structure investigations, Vickers hardness test, and tensile load bearing capacity test were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of joints. Welding process using 2.30 V, 2.67 V, and 3.20 V argon gas have higher tensile shear load bearing capacity than carbon dioxide gas and no shielding gas. Argon gas using 3.20 V resulted the highest tensile load bearing capacity of 0.385 kN with a possibility of interfacial failure mode. The increasing of welding voltage caused the increasing nugget size. The nugget welded with argon gas had the highest level of hardness effect of grain size reducing due to it’s cooling rate.
