    Abstract

    This research aim to know the effect of welding speed to mechanical and physical properties on dissimilar metal’s joint between carbon steel St.37 and Aluminum AA1001 with 3 mm of thickness using Friction Stir Welding (FSW). Oxy-Acetylene welding were used to preheat the carbon steel during FSW process. The observed parameter are tensile strength, bending strength, hardness, micro structural and macro photograph. FSW processed by using milling machine and the welding tool material is Amutit with pin diameter is 4 mm, shoulder diameter is 18 mm, with 60 HRc in hardness. The welding parameter are rotational speed 630 rpm, tool offset is 1.5 mm, preheat offset is 20 mm, the welding speed were varied in 25 mm/minute, 32 mm/minute and 40 mm/minute with depth of plunge is 2.95 mm. The result shows that highest tensile strength (108.96 MPa) occurs on welding speed 25 mm/min, highest face bending strength (205.79 Mpa) occurs on welding speed 32 mm, highest root bending strength (253.51 Mpa) occurs on welding speed 25 mm. The nugget zone at retreating side has various hardness because of unequal carbon steel inclusion that cause Intermetallic particle FexAly. On the micro structural photograph, HAZ area has grain growth due to the weld heat received, and the nugget shows smaller and thighter micro structure.
