    Abstract

    Syifauz Zahriyah, 2009. ESTERIFICATION OF FREE FATTY ACIDS IN USED COOKING OILS USING TiO2/MONTMORILLONITE AS CATALYST AND IT’S IMPACT ON THE BIODIESEL YIELD. Thesis. Department of Chemistry. Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty. Sebelas Maret University. Esterification of free fatty acids in used cooking oils using TiO2/montmorillonite as the catalyst in biodiesel production has been done. Used cooking oils was esterified with methanol (molar ratio of methanol to oil 6:1) in presence of TiO2/montmorillonite catalyst. TiO2/montmorillonite ratio by weight was varied in 0.1%, 0.5 %, 1.0 %, 5.0 % and 10% (w/w). The esterification was carried out at 70 oC for 2 hours. Acid value from the esterification yield was determined by titration using KOH. The lowest acid value was used for transesterification reaction using methanol and catalyzed by NaOH (1% w/w). Molar ratio of oils to methanol was varied in 1:6; 1:12; 1:18; 1:24; and 1:30. Biodiesel product was identified by 1HNMR and GCMS. The physical characterization of biodiesel was analyzed by American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) method then compared with ASTM D 6751 and Indonesian Standard (SNI). The analyzing of free fatty acids in used cooking oils after esterification showed that the optimum addition of catalyst was exhibited at 10% of catalyst percentage with 0,009 of acid value. The obtained biodiesel was clear yellow colors of liquid with such typical scent. The highest yield was 74,02% at 1:24 ratio molar oils to methanol. Identification of methyl ester by 1HNMR showed that almost all of trigliseride were converted to methyl ester. GCMS characterization showed that the methyl ester had similar fragmentation with methyl ester myristate, methyl ester palmitoleate, methyl ester palmitate, methyl ester oleat and methyl ester isostearat. The physical properties of biodiesel were obtained as follows specific gravity of 0,8791; kinematic viscosity of 4,5042 cSt; cloud point of 18 oC; cooper strip corrosion of 1a; and carbon residu of 0,0971%. It was accepted by ASTM D 6751 and SNI. In the other hand, flash point of 96 oC; water content of 0,24% and sediment of 0,2137% wasn’t accepted by ASTM D 6751 and SNI.
