    Abstract

Bay leaves and rambutan peels contain several active compounds that have antibacterial effects that can cure diseases caused by bacterial infection such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. The aims of this research is to identify the antibacterial activity of extracts combination of bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight.) Walp) and rambutan peels (Nephelium lappaceum L.) towards Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. This study was experimental research using colonies of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Bay leaves and rambutan peels extract were obtained by using maceration of alcohol 70%, and it was combined. Antibacterial activity test using diffusion method with concentration of 60%:40%, 50%:50%, and 40%:60%. The extract concentration were inserted into each hole which diameter was 6 mm in MHA media that have been inoculated with bacterial suspensions, then it was incubated for 24 hours. After that, the inhibition zone diameter was observed. The data was analyzed with SPSS 17.0 using One-way ANOVA. The results showed that the extracts combination of bay leaves and rambutan peels had antibacterial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis in which the largest inhibition diameter were 9.6 mm and 8.7 mm. It were both at a concentration of 60%:40%. The analysis showed that there were no significant differences between the antibacterial activity of the combination concentration of bay leaves and rambutan peels extract except with control of Ciprofloxacin there were significant differences between the antibacterial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Key words: Antibacterial, bay leaf, rambutan peel, S. aureus, S. epidermidis
