    Abstract

    Azizah Nur, Nasir Abdi, 2015, "Making Natural Dyes of Annatto Using Batch Extraction System With Three Stages Counter Current Flow " Diploma III of Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. Kesumba (Bixa orellana Linn), also known as kunyit jawa, galinggem, paparada, or galuga. The trees of Annatto reaches till eight meters in height is native in Central America. The fruit is similar with Rambutan fruit. The seeds of Annatto is containing bright red (annatto) and yellow-brown pigment (bixin) Annatto utilization is still limited, whereas dye bixin as the major coloring compound in Annatto can be exploited into the natural food dye. The aim of the research is to determine the amount and concentration of bixin using batch extraction system with three stages counter current flow. The method was used for making natural dyes of Annatto seeds is batch extraction system with three stages counter current flow at 60°C, a rotation speed of 400 rpm, water as solvent, the weight ratio of Annatto seeds and solvent is 50 grams: 150 mL (1: 3); 50 grams: 250 mL (1: 5); and 50 grams: 350 mL (1: 7). The extract was analyzed using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer using bixin as a standard solution. Bixin concentration results obtained in a ratio of 1: 7 is 122 mg/L, the ratio of 1:5 is 141 mg / L, the ratio of 1:3 was 242 mg / L. It appears that the levels of good bixin and approaching to steady state is the extraction with ratio 1: 5 with the result of concentration 141 mg / L.
