    Abstract

    The government in 2014 started to release Public Service Obligation (PSO) every year for PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) for economy class and short distance trains. The PSO aims these trains which are very popular for daily transportation and are expected to be the solution of traffic jams. Prameks is one of short distance train in Yogyakarta which accepted PSO. The train transports passengers from Solobalapan to Yogyakarta and Kutoarjo. This study purposes the impact of passenger’s economy condition by chosing public transportation options after the PSO policy released, as well as the benefits and barriers in the transition to commuter rail transportation. The aspects which used in this study is individual impacts to assess the economy impacts, and five aspects of selecting the transportation, which are: arrival departure, obtainable seats, station and train services, weather friendly waiting places, and short time to depart the passengers. The study used descriptive qualitative method. Data collection by purposive sampling technique, which are: observation, interviews and documentation. The primary data was collected from observation and interviews, while secondary data was collected from Prameks passenger’s report each semester. Data were analyzed by interactive analysis technique. The study result shows a decreasing ticket price after PSO policy released. This impacts passenger’s economy condition which they pay lesser price. The PSO policy also increasing the number of short distance train passengers in each semester. Prameks is obviously chosen by passengers because it considered as environment friendly transportation which is able to transport large quantity of passengers and lesser pollution production. The only barrier for the passengers after selecting transportation to Prameks is lack of ticket every trip. Keywords: impact, Public Service Obligation (PSO), preferred transportation and trains.
