    Abstract

The research aims at revealing whether: (1) TAPPS is more effective than lecture method to teach speaking; (2) the students with high learning interest have better speaking skill than those with low learning interest; and (3) there is an interaction between the teaching methods and students’ interest in teaching speaking . This experimental study was carried out at the SMK N 1 Boyolali in the academic year of 2013/2014. The population is two classes of the second semester of tenth grade students of SMK N 1 Boyolali in the academic year of 2013/2014. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling and it yields two classes: class A as the experimental group and class B as the control group in which each consists of 30 students for the sample of the study. The experimental group was treated by using TAPPS method while the control group was treated by using direct method. The instruments used to collect the data are a test on speaking skill and a questionnaire on interest. The data were analyzed by using multifactor analysis of variance (ANOVA 2X2) and tukey test. The result of data analysis shows that: (1) the students who are taught using TAPPS method have better speaking skill than those who are taught using Direct Method. In other words, the use of TAPPS method is more effective than Direct Method for teaching speaking at the tenth grade students of SMK N 1 Boyolali, (2) the students who have high interest have better speaking skill than those who have low interest at the tenth grade students of SMK N 1 Boyolali, (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and interest in teaching speaking to the tenth grade students of SMK N 1 Boyolali. Based on the above findings, it can be concluded that TAPPS is an effective method to teach speaking for the tenth grade students of SMK N 1 Boyolali in the Academic Year of 2013/2014. The effectiveness of the method is influenced by the students’ level of interest. Key words: TAPPS, Direct Method, speaking skill, interest, experimental study
