    Abstract

    The objectives of this study are to find out the correlation between: (1) higher order thinking skill and reading skill; (2) morphological awareness and reading skill; and (3) higher order thinking skill and morphological awareness simultaneously, and reading skill. The method of this study is correlational method. The study was held from June to July 2014. The population of this study was all of the fourth semester students of English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University Surakarta in the academic year 2013-2014. The sample of this study was 35 students that were selected by using cluster random sampling. The researcher used objective tests as the instrument to collect the data. Single and Multiple Linear Regression and Correlation were used to analyze the data. The result of the study shows that (1) there is a positive correlation between higher order thinking skill and reading skill; (2) there is a positive correlation between morphological awareness and reading skill; and (3) there is positive a correlation between higher order thinking skill and morphological awareness simultaneously, and reading skill. The results of the correlation tests indicate that both higher order thinking skill and morphological awareness have correlation and contribution to reading skill. It can be said that higher order thinking skill and morphological awareness are important aspects of reading skill.
